Trekking Mount Lokon and Mahawu Mountain from Manado
Everyone who visits Manado should go to marveling at the great views of Mount Mahawu and Mount Lokon. These places become the most popular trekking track. Once your driver arrives, start the trip to Mahawu mountain. It takes around an hour drive from Manado. The mountain stands about 1,311 meters above sea level, it takes only 10 minutes to reach the top. There are great views (to the west) towards Mount Lokon and Mount Empung. The main path offers a route down into the crater. The volcanic crater is still active and even on the rim, the smell of sulfur was strong. Visit the eruption sites, see how lava impacts impressive landscapes and fumaroles smoking through the rocks.
Move to Lokon Mount 11 km away from Mahawu Mountain. Mount Lokon has a flat and craterless top located on its foot, named Tompaluan Crater. This active crater located on the saddle between the two peaks of Lokon and Empung Mountain. You will need proper trekking shoes to trek to the crater, as the igneous rock trail formed by cooled lava can be slippery.
